Well first I just want to introduce myself to everyone in this forum. I am a 22 year old female graduating this quarter with a major in Mass Communications. For my leisure time I enjoy working out listening to music, writing poetry, dancing and of course shopping. I am the total girlie girl; my favorite color is pink, I love jewelry, fashion, make-up, and I love smelling good. Perfume is my favorite, I recently purchased the new guess perfume and I totally love it.
Now that you know a little about me I can proceed with my experience. I am currently enrolled in an online woman and leisure class, and we were assigned to do a project where our leisure activity of our choice was documented with pictures or video recording, or some form of visual aid to prove the activity was accomplished. Now, this sounds easy right? The catch was, you had to engage in an activity that is non-traditional for your gender and it had to be a new activity that you’ve never tried before while relating it to the material we read in class. So, with me being a girlie girl, I decided to take up the activity of playing with a gaming console: Guitar Hero! This activity was definitely something new and adventurous for me. I am comfortable with holding a clutch purse rather than a guitar. After I began playing, I started to get into it and it became fun. At first I was a little skeptical about this activity because I didn’t want to be laughed at by my roommates. My roommates are all good and I watch them play all the time. I just didn’t want to be the spectacle of the conversation. When someone is laughing at your incapability’s to perform an activity, it can take the pleasure away from the experience. Fortunately my roommates were all supportive and we all laughed together at how crazy I looked. During the course of my playing, pictures were being taken and I later put together a mini video with the pictures that were taken and added Andre 3000’s Prototype song. It was a great experience I was able to let loose and become a real guitar hero. I think too often girls don’t play video games because the true competitive person comes out and maybe that’s intimidating for some people.
In the Victorian Era, women weren’t allowed to participate in activities unless they were dressed in small shorts, and were over feminized. The female athletes would have to be sexy on and off the court/field in order to avoid the stereotypes of athletic women being gay.
Times have really changed, now title IV has come out which means women have to have the same number of sports available to them as men athletes have available for men. We can choose to participate in almost any sport and not feel the need to justify our gender preference or defend our sexuality.
Thank goodness times have changed.
Feel free to comment, I would love to hear feedback on anything that was mentioned in my message.

Hi guys! Wanna do something fun? You can open a poker night with all your friends, males and female together. Poker can be a fun game for both gender and a little bet can make the game more fun. However, what kind of bet depends on you guys, but if you decided to bet money, make sure you play it lower so that you can have fun and not lose so much at the same time. A little bet always make the game more fun such as watch football games or other things. If you think girls can’t play poker, you’ll be sorry if you ever doubt a girl in poker. I was a beginner in poker and I guess it was beginner’s luck, but I won some money from my family.

Poker is also a fun thing for family. It can also bonds family together and the whole house will have great fun together. Since poker can have a lot of players in it, anybody can join the game. There are also different type of poker games. The one I happen to play was call texas hold’em. And bluffing the other players was so much fun because if you put on the right poker face no one can tell if you’re bluffing you not. Sometime bluffing works, sometime it doesn’t, if you’re up a against good players maybe you shouldn’t take the chance unless you have a good hands. Well, that’s my idea for a fun game, old players can always teach new player so they can join the fun!

Hello All! I too took the recreation class and was given a great opportunity to experience something new. Like may others, I do not try many new things. There are so many things that sound exciting and wonderful but there is no motivation behind the hidden desires to try these new activities. I think I might make a fool out of myself or I don't know anyone who will go and try this new thing with me. I really allow this to hold me back from experiencing life and doing what makes me happy. Now that I am completely aware of this problem, I have tried to make some changes. With this class, I challenged myself to go and shoot guns. I have always had a fear of being anywhere near guns because of the lack of comfort and knowledge. So, not only was I going to learn something new I was forcing myself to face a fear. This activity was quite exciting and exhilarating at times. It also showed me that I can do anything I want if I would just get over the fear of trying and not wait for someone else to hold my hand. I hope that if you are like me you can muster up the courage to step outside of the box you have put yourself in and challenge any stereotype that may present itself to you.

I am not really an active person and have not been since I was about 12 years old. Growing up I was really into dancing and cheerleading. For whatever reason I became uninterested in any activity after I hit my teens. I have pretty much remained inactive since. I am a full time college student working really hard trying to put myself through college. Being a full time student and working leaves me with very little time to participate in anything fun outside of hanging out at home with my boyfriend. I think the time issue is the main reason I have not gotten into any fun activity recently.
This quarter I am taking a women recreation class that requires me to explore different leisure activities. There has been a few assignments that have forced me to think outside of my normal train of thought and considered different activities for me to participate in. One assignment in particular required me to participate in a leisure activated uncommon to women. When I was first given the assignment I thought it was dumb and did not want to waste my time doing it. Once I realized that the assignment was required for a passing grade I sat down and did some brainstorming. I wrote down a few activities that I thought might work for this assignment. When I was done I settled on sport shooting. I decide to go to a shooting rage. So one saturday my boyfriend and I went to a local shooting range in San Rafael, CA.
I really enjoyed myself. It was really relaxing and allowed me to relieve a lot of stress. While there I was not worried about work, any school assignment or any other things that I am usually stressed about. This activity is really a good stress relieve and helps you take you mind off the outside world. I would recommend sport shooting to anyone looking for a cool and interesting activity to participate in. I actually have plans to go to another shooting range in the near future.

Hello everyone,
I never really tried new things until I entered this course, I usually just stayed doing the regular like going shopping and hanging out with my family. For my leisure project I went to the shooting range for the first time I was afraid to try it bad it turned out to be not that bad. I went to Jackson Arms shooting range in South San Francisco. It was kind of expensive but it's a fun experience I think it would be a nice indoor place to go.

If any of you are looking for an interesting form of leisure for women, men, and the whole family I suggest a wine tour of the Napa Valley. This is an experience that people of all ages (even the kids) can enjoy as a form of leisure. The website that caught my attention due to the high volume of traffic was www.napawinetours.net. There are even a few tours that depart from San Francisco by railroads, making the most out of our State’s wonderful scenery. These tours are famous for its pampered elegance, fine cuisine, and diverse wines. I’ve been lucky enough to go on one of these tours. It’s definitely worth your time and money if you have a few spare hours.

Not only do you get to relax onboard a luxurious train with terrific meals and wine samples. But you also get to travel to the vineyards that make the wines that you’ve been drinking earlier. I was quite impressed by this new form of leisure. It’s nice to experience a finer living of life every once and a while. As I’ve said before you should always take the time to pamper yourself. I’m sure most of us like to enjoy a nice wine from time to time. It’s a nice change of pace from all the beers and hard liquors that frequent store shelves. The Napa Valley train tours are an excellent start into the world of grape agriculture and the wine making industry.

Also remember that these tours are seasonal (usually November through April) so please plan accordingly. I hope this has piqued your interest as I know you’ll have a wonderful time.
